MARINE SCIENCES DEPARTMENT
The Marine Sciences Department was established in 2015 during the establishment of İskenderun Technical University and the restructuring of our faculty. Marine Sciences department, which also covers subjects in the field of basic sciences; marine, inland waters and the living life they contain; Its deals with life in detail by biological, chemical, geological and ecological aspects.
The purposes of these studies in the department are;
- to determine the natural habitats, populations, relationships and processes in this environment and to reveal the system dynamics by regularly monitoring the aquatic ecosystems with qualitative and quantitative methods.
- to provide and process a systematic knowledge in order to make optimum use of the aquatic environment and living resources.
- to conduct researches and develop methods and models in order to ensure the sustainable use of living and non-living resources.
For these purposes, Multidisciplinary research is carried out in marine biodiversity, water quality and pollution, water chemistry, marine pollution, fisheries biology, molecular ecology, fish systematics, population genetics, invasive species, marine and freshwater ecology, ecosystem ecology, aquatic invertebrate biology, plankton systematics and biology, geometric morphology, phylogeny and related fields.
In our department, undergraduate and graduate education are supported. There are a total of 9 academic staff, including 7 Professors, 1 Dr Asst. Prof. and 1 Research Assistant Doctor, who are experts in their fields.
There are Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetics, Basic Sciences and Water Quality Research Laboratories in the Marine Sciences Department, and the Research Laboratories are equipped to conduct advanced research. The research opportunities of the marine sciences department are not limited to the units affiliated with the department. The Marine sciences department has also additional usage facilities such as Fish Behavior Laboratory, Aquaculture Laboratory, Fish Health Laboratory, Aquarium Unit, post-operative room, simple intervention room, washing and disinfection room, reception and quarantine room, meeting room in the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology laboratory complex. In addition, the research ship named RV/İSTE 1 within our university is among the research opportunities of our department.
