PROF. DR. DURUEL, NEWLY APPOINTED RECTOR OF ISTE, WELCOMES CONGRATULATIONS AT INTRODUCTION CEREMONY
According to the appointment decision published in the Official Gazette dated December 21, 2024, and numbered 32759, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Duruel has been appointed as the Rector of Iskenderun Technical University ( ISTE) and accepted congratulations at the meeting programme.
According to the appointment decision published in the Official Gazette dated December 21, 2024, and numbered 32759, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Duruel has been appointed as the Rector of Iskenderun Technical University (İSTE). The introduction program, hosted by Prof. Dr. Duruel, witnessed broad participation, including ISTE’s academic and administrative staff, students, members of the press, and other distinguished guests. The event took place at ISTE’s Central Campus Orange Hall at 11:00 AM.
The program began with a moment of silence and the national anthem, followed by a recitation of the Quran by ISTE Ahmet Karatoyuk Mosque Imam Hatip Murat Ateş. During his speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Duruel expressed his gratitude:
“It is a great honour for me to assume the role of Rector of Iskenderun Technical University through the appointment by our esteemed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our President and to the Chairman of the Council of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, for entrusting me with this significant responsibility. I pledge to exert every effort to fulfil my duties and to further elevate our university to greater heights.”
Prof. Dr. Duruel highlighted Hatay’s historical significance as a meeting point of civilizations, its cultural richness, and its economic potential. He emphasized Iskenderun’s strategic importance as a major trade and logistics hub, not only for Turkey but also for the Middle East. He stated:
“Iskenderun Technical University plays a crucial role in driving regional economic development and technological transformation, thanks to its technical expertise and academic resources. Our university stands out as a hub of education focusing on industry and technology, supported by its qualified human resources and unique projects. Universities are among the most vital institutions that shape the future of societies and foster innovation through science and technology. With its innovative approach and ‘Technoversity’ vision, ISTE aims to lead regional development. My goal is to advance our university’s vision and elevate it to the status of a globally competitive institution of higher education.”
He also addressed ISTE’s commitment to supporting the region's recovery following the devastating February 6 earthquake. “Our departments, including Civil Engineering, the new Engineering Faculty, and the Faculty of Architecture, have immense potential to contribute through significant projects. We will make every effort to realize this potential, working in solidarity with all relevant institutions,” Prof. Dr. Duruel affirmed.
Touching upon the region’s geopolitical significance, particularly concerning neighbouring Syria, Prof. Dr. Duruel remarked:
“The course of history is being reshaped in this region. Syria, as a country with deep cultural and spiritual ties to Turkey, remains crucial to our shared heritage. Our university aims to play a role in rebuilding these areas, not just physically but also sociologically, culturally, politically, and economically. Through our faculties and resources, we will contribute to both national and regional prosperity, supporting our academic staff in their endeavours.”
He concluded his speech with a focus on fostering a harmonious working environment:
“Dear colleagues, we know that productivity and meaningful contributions require a peaceful atmosphere. At ISTE, we will immediately prioritize establishing a workplace that inspires both passion and serenity. Justice and equity will guide our actions, ensuring that no one feels marginalized or excluded. By maintaining this harmony, I am confident that we will enhance our efficiency and make significant contributions to our region and our country.”
The program ended with Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Duruel receiving congratulations from the attendees, marking the beginning of his tenure.
