ISTE CONTINUES TO BRING GOOD NEWS
Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE) Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Muharrem Karaaslan succeeded in taking part in the management committee of a project approved within the framework of COST Actions.
Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE) Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences member Prof. Dr. Muharrem Karaaslan has been appointed to the management committee of a project approved under the COST Actions framework. The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Senior Officials Committee (CSO) has approved the funding for 60 new COST Actions set to begin in Fall 2024. Among these, the project titled CA23125 - The mETamaterial foRmalism approach to recognize cAncer (TETRA), in which Prof. Dr. Karaaslan is involved, has been selected. This project includes participants from 12 EU countries: Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Serbia, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
The recently approved TETRA project, focusing on early cancer detection and effective treatment, is of critical importance for increasing patient survival rates. The rapid advancements in machine learning (ML), especially deep learning, are enabling significant improvements in the accuracy of cancer screening, detection, and monitoring. Members of the TETRA network will collaborate to optimize methodologies for experimental visualization of biomedical tissues, develop new theories for digitizing and interpreting biological tissues, and create and test classification algorithms for automatic detection of cancerous regions. The ultimate goal of the project is to build the knowledge base needed for the future development of ground-breaking technologies using metamaterial formalism approaches for fast and cost-effective cancer detection and to establish a new field of material medicine.
ISTE Rector Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci congratulated Prof. Dr. Muharrem Karaaslan for his role in the TETRA project, emphasizing the contribution to ISTE's vision through collaboration with scientists from around the world. Prof. Dr. Depci stated, “I am honoured to be part of the same institution with valuable academics from the ISTE family who make us proud with their achievements both nationally and internationally. There should be no doubt that we will continue to work tirelessly to represent our country. If we are granted the opportunity in the coming period, we will ensure that these successes are just the beginning, and we will continue to make Türkiye a symbol on the international stage with new projects, God willing.”
