Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE) hosted a series of events as part of the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, and Youth Week. The events, which started on Wednesday, May 15, will continue until Tuesday, May 21. The events span a wide range from career days to sports competitions, theatre plays to concerts, band performances to cooking contests, all of which have attracted great interest from students.
The first whistles for sports competitions, including futsal, single hoop basketball, volleyball, and table tennis, also blew on May 15. Teams competed to win over four days in the ISTE Central Campus indoor and outdoor sports complexes, and the award ceremony for the competitions was held on Saturday, May 18. The winning teams and individual athletes received their awards in a ceremony held in front of the İSTE Indoor Sports Complex. This year, the most sportsmanlike team was High Voltage, and the winners of the table tennis competitions were Aydın Çetinbaş, Furkan İlhan, and Eren Çelik.
The traditional Atatürk Run, held on the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, was started by ISTE Rector Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci. In the race, where students ran to win on the central campus, the winners in the women's category were Dilan Levent, Melda Yaren Akpınar, and Esra Erşen; in the men's category, Şakir Akdağ, Enes Ertaş, and Ömer Rahmet Dalseçkin were the first to cross the finish line. As part of the 105th Anniversary celebration program of the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, Rector Depci also participated in the district events held in Iskenderun. In his evaluation of this special day, which is celebrated with enthusiasm all over the country, he said:
“I hope that the events we have organized as part of the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, and Youth Week, on which great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades ignited the fire of independence and gifted to the youth, were enjoyable for our students. I wish for our students to develop themselves in every field by taking advantage of the science, art, and sports opportunities we offer them. At this point, I would like to thank Mr. Mehmet Dönmez, Mayor of Iskenderun, who has supported us with opportunities, has been serving our city in every field since the day he took office, has been working tirelessly, and is preparing Iskenderun for an even better future than its old beautiful days, and for organizing concerts without forgetting our youth, on behalf of myself and the entire İSTE Family.”
