GASTRONOMY STUDENTS COMPETE TO BE THE WINNER
Within the scope of the 19 May Youth Week activities organised by Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE), students of the Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts competed for the first place in the seafood and tart category.
As part of the May 19 Youth Week activities organized by İskenderun Technical University (ISTE), students from the Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts competed for first place in the seafood and tart categories. The competition took place on Friday, May 17th, at the ISTE Health Culture and Sports Directorate Event Hall, where dishes prepared by student chefs fiercely competed. ISTE Rector, Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci, and his wife Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aytemis Depci hosted the event, while Iskenderun Mayor Mehmet Dönmez, President of Iskenderun Gastronomy Association, academic staff, and students from the ISTE Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts also attended the competition, which drew considerable attention from the students.
In the competition, where each team consisted of two members in the seafood and tart categories and a total of 19 teams competed, the jury included ISTE Rector, Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci and his wife Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aytemis Depci, Iskenderun Mayor Mehmet Dönmez, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism Yakup Kutlu, Head of the ISTE Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sait Doğan, and President of the Iskenderun Gastronomy Association Gülşen Sökmen. After the teams presented their beautifully prepared dishes, the jury members proceeded to taste the plates prepared by the young chefs. Moving from table to table where dishes were presented, the jury members first tasted the plates with seafood and then the tart plates.
ISTE Rector Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci stated that the events organized for the ISTE students during the May 19 Youth Week would continue until Tuesday, saying, "Today, we have come together for the competition of our Gastronomy and Culinary Arts students. Our students, who receive education in the practice kitchen we have brought to our city Hatay, have demonstrated some of what they can do. All the dishes we tasted were excellent. I thank all the students involved and their instructors. I wholeheartedly believe that our students will proudly uphold the name of ISTE in national and international cuisines."
In the fiercely contested competition, Ömer Balta and Beyzanur Yaşar won first place in the seafood category with their Salmon Cage dish, while Hatice Çakır and Ayyüce Cücemen took second place with their Salmon Fillet dish accompanied by Spinach Pasta, and Yunus Sarıkaya and Umut Arviş secured third place with their Seafood Kokoreç dish. In the tart category, the winners were as follows: Furkan Can Üzüm and Beyza Betül Güneş with their Forest Fruit Tart in first place, Emire Karagülle and Selin Serap Tatlı with their Tart on Mango Bed in second place, and Hasret Ayriç and Helin Ötmi with their Mango Pineapple Tart in third place. After the competition, the award-winning students were presented with their prizes, and the event concluded with a group photo session.
