ISTE STUDENTS TOOK THEIR PROFESSIONAL OATH
Our students at Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE) Barbaros Hayrettin Naval Architecture and Maritime Faculty - Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department took their professional oaths on their way to become Oceangoing Watchkeeping Officers.
Our students at Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE) Barbaros Hayrettin Naval Architecture and Maritime Faculty - Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department took their professional oaths on their way to become Oceangoing Watchkeeping Officers. On the day coinciding with April 23rd National Sovereignty and Children's Day and the 9th Anniversary of İskenderun Technical University (ISTE), the oath-taking ceremony was hosted by ISTE Rector Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci. Iskenderun District Governor Murat Sefa Demiryürek, Belen District Governor Mahmut Sami Yılmaz, Iskenderun District Gendarmerie Commander G. Major Yusuf Yıldırım, maritime sector representatives, ISTE academic and administrative staff, students and their families attended the oath-taking ceremony.
The oath ceremony, where the 2027 Deck Department students of Barbaros Hayrettin Naval Architecture and Maritime Faculty, Department of Marine Transportation and Management Engineering, took the first step into their professions, started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem. After taking oaths that encompassed science, enlightenment, ethics, morals, customs, traditions, and the blue homeland, the students will undergo rigorous maritime education at ISTE in accordance with the regulations of the Higher Education Council, International Maritime Organization, and the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs. They are poised to become successful mariners upon completion of this challenging maritime education at ISTE.
ISTE Rector Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci, beginning his speech by stating his belief that the Maritime students, whom he sees as the "heartfelt ambassadors" of ISTE, will be very successful in the blue homeland and international waters, continued his speech as follows: “The basis of my belief lies in the comprehensive and high-quality education they have received at our university throughout their academic journey. At ISTE, with our dynamic academic staff, infrastructure supporting maritime education, student-centred approach, and industry collaboration, we are nurturing competent maritime professionals. When we were faced with the proposal to remove the name Barbaros Hayrettin, I strongly opposed it. I greet you all as the grandchildren of Barbaros. I wish the future sailors, who took their oaths in their white uniforms, a successful career by blending their education with maritime traditions and customs as they navigate the waves. I also congratulate all the families who have supported our students and contributed to bringing them to this point through their hard work”.
ISTE Rector Depci also made a statement regarding the 9th Anniversary of the Establishment of Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE): "Today marks the 9th anniversary of the establishment of Iskenderun Technical University, which is one of Türkiye's prominent technical universities. As we celebrate these days, let us hope for many more years and centuries to come. Our ancestors sacrificed their lives to build this paradise homeland, which is now entrusted to us by our children, the guarantee of our future. With this awareness, we carry out all our endeavours. As a father, I wish for my own children a secure, happy, and successful future, and I wish the same for all children. On this unique day that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk dedicated to all children of the world, I wish peace and tranquillity to all children, regardless of race, religion, or language, especially to the children of Gaza who are suffering under oppression.".
After the Oath Ceremony, a cake was cut in honour of ISTE's 9th anniversary and the ceremony ended with a cocktail presentation.
