YET ANOTHER APPROVAL TO ISTE’S TUBITAK 1001 PROJECT GRANT APPLICATIONS
The project led by Prof. Dr. Deniz Ergüden, a faculty member of the Department of Marine Sciences at the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology at Iskenderun Technical University (ISTE), has been awarded support by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) 1001 - Scientific and Technological Research Projects Support Program.
The project titled 'Identification of Incidentally Captured Individuals and Determination of Distribution and Reproduction Areas of Sandbar Shark Carcharhinus plumbeus in the Coastal Areas of Mersin Bay (Silifke-Taşucu) Based on Visual Sampling' led by Prof. Prof. Dr. Ergüden's project will continue for 30 months.
The project, accompanied by faculty members from different universities, aims to determine the regional status of Carcharhinus plumbeus populations classified as 'Endangered (EN)' throughout the Mediterranean, reduce incidental fishing based on information obtained from data collected by the project team in the field and supported by local ecological knowledge (citizen science), promote practices to reduce accidental capture, identify and protect critical habitats such as mating, breeding, and feeding areas, and effectively share the acquired information with stakeholders.
This project, which is the first study supported under the TÜBİTAK 1001 Projects within the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology at ISTE's Department of Marine Sciences, will involve researchers such as Prof. Dr. Cem Çevik from Çukurova University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sibel Alagöz Ergüden, Prof. Dr. Halit Filiz from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Prof. Dr. Deniz Ayas from Mersin University, and Prof. Dr. Ali İşmen from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University.
In his evaluation, ISTE Rector Prof. Dr. Tolga Depci stated, "We are once again experiencing the honor and joy of receiving support for a 1001 Project. As always, we at İSTE have added another success to our achievements and made it a habit. I congratulate Prof. Dr. Ergüden, who is part of the same family, and wish success to all stakeholders involved in this project.
