“International Student” Influx to iSTE!
International student registrations have started following the international student admission applications for the 2019-2020 Academic Calendar. The registrations of the international students, who were placed into one of the programs that run at ISTE based on their application score and application choices, is accepted by the Student Affairs Office.
Compared to the previous years, the number of international students who applied to study at ISTE has increased exponentially. There were almost 5000 applications this year and, following the evaluation criteria, a total of 907 students from 35 different countries earned the right to register as an international student at ISTE. The remaining student quota will become available for a second round of application after the first stage of registrations end, and international students will be able to register until the start of the next Academic Calendar.
International students who arrived at Iskenderun Technical University to complete their registration stated that they did their research on ISTE and Iskenderun and they preferred to study at ISTE because they wanted to study at a technology and student friendly university as well as a city which is located next to the Mediterranean Sea.
Osama Alsaidi, one of the international students who came to register, explained: “I have applied to many universities in Turkey; however, I wanted to study at Iskenderun Technical University. Suggestions that I received from my friends who were readily studying here had an impact on my choice. Also, university staff was very helpful in this process, they really helped me a lot, and they provided support on one-on-one basis. I feel strong that I will achieve a good career after I study and graduate from Computer Sciences Department. Furthermore, studying in a city which is so beautiful, developed, and with opportunities in relation to engineering-related career options will contribute a lot to my self-development.”
Professor Türkay Dereli, the Rector of ISTE, made a short statement in relation to the start of international student registrations and underlined the importance of internationalization by stating: “International students are one of the factors that define the international status and international recognition of a university, and they play an important role in the internationalization process. Having 10% of the student population made of international students is the generally expected norm. At ISTE, we aim to go over this threshold limit and, therefore, we have increased our quota this year to reach our goals. We have received many applications and a total of 907 students from 35 countries received an acceptance letter after a meticulous selection criteria. Now, they are here to do their pre-registrations. Those students, who are most likely to go back to their home countries, will become natural ambassadors of not only Iskenderun but also Turkey. Therefore, we pay special attention to them and aim to provide them support on one-to-one basis. Because of their efforts on this matter, I extend my gratitude to the Student Affairs and International Relations Offices”.
